Snack Better With Sahale
THE DAILY SAUCE
10/05/2005

Tired of granola, trail mix and all those other natural snacks that taste like cardboard after a while? So were Josh Schroeter and Edmond Sanctis, founders of Sahale Snacks in Seattle. After descending Mount Rainier after a three-day climb, the two friends were sick of their trail mix and hatched the idea for a better healthy snack using nuts, fruits and flavors influenced from world cuisines.

Named after Sahale Peak in the North Cascades, Sahale Snacks are now available in St. Louis. The four blends are truly interesting and surprisingly tasty. For instance, the Valdosta blend combines black peppered pecans, dried cranberries and hint of orange zest. Our taste buds sang with the Ksar Blend: pistachio, sesame and pumpkin seeds, fig and a kick of peppery Moroccan harissa.

We found the pouches handy to tote around but initially thought they were too chintzy for a mid-afternoon snack. We were wrong. A 2-ounce pouch packs a punch and is full of filling tree nuts and yummy fruit such as dates, mango and papaya. If you're concerned about fat, remember that tree nuts are full of healthy fat, and nutritionists suggest that 1 to 2 ounces of nuts per day is a healthy addition to any diet.

Just don't look for any M&Ms or raisins.
