Trees With Flair
Let your tree be your guide
By Scott Hepper
St. Louis Homes & Lifestyles
December 2006

Scott Hepper, Master Designer for Straub's, offers tips for designing a world-class tree for the holidays, combining souvenirs, pictures and objects collected from favorite places. Travels to Napa Valley, Sonoma wine country and San Francisco provide inspiration for an elegant, simply designed tree that blends the holidays with personal connections, and showcases travel memorabilia.

DESIGN TIPS FOR A WORLD-CLASS TREE

Most of what you need to achieve this special look is already in your home using pictures from travels, decorative frames and yes, even small suitcases.

OBTAIN petite decorative suitcases at any home decor store - prop open halfway with wrapped gifts.

ATTACH luggage tags to smaller trunks or decorative suitcases as gifts for holiday guests and family in lieu of stockings. For the larger trees adorning the great room or foyer, attach travel gift bags or small suitcases full of gifts.

SCAN OR REPRINT old family photos or vacation photos in sepia tone or black and white. Frames can be of the same style or similar complementary patterns.

CREATE interesting ornamentation with other travel souvenirs. If Japan or the Orient is your cup of tea, place teapots or sake cups on the tree - even chopsticks add a world traveling flair. Framed wine labels from a favorite wine spot in France or Italy will bring a bit of personal flavor to your tree.

PLACE your tree atop trunks for added height. Place tables around the tree and use it as a centerpiece. Party invitations and nametags can even be designed as passports as well as Christmas cards for an international theme.
